Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be an expert shot?

No. Many people who take the class have had little marksmanship training. It is recommended that you should have a familiarity with your gun of choice and should fire some practice rounds before attending the class.

Is there a written test and is it hard?

Yes there is a written test, but there is no reason for anybody to not pass. All information on the test is discussed during class.

Do I need to own a gun to get a license?

No, in the event you are waiting to purchase a gun, one will be available for use to qualify.

What type of gun should I qualify with?

Normally, you want to qualify with a semi-automatic, 380 caliber or up. However, if you choose to qualify with a revolver, it must be a 38 caliber or larger. By qualifying with a semi automatic, you can carry either a semi automatic or a revolver, both of any caliber.

Why is the class so long?

The law mandates the class has to be a minimum of 10 hours and a maximum of 15 hours. This includes range time.

Do I have to register the gun I qualify with?

No. The Texas Concealed Handgun law is not about registering handguns.
